Technology to Achieve 'Net Zero'

Carbon Clean Solutions and Veolia join forces for large-scale CO2 Capture and industrial reuse

The partnership will lead to the large-scale de-carbonisation of a number of industrial processes and reduce their greenhouse effect under an Open Innovation approach.

Veolia, the global leader for optimised resource management, today announces the signing of a new partnership agreement with Carbon Clean Solutions Limited (CCSL), a global leader in low-cost carbon capture technology, for the large-scale rollout of CCSL’s patented carbon dioxide (CO2) separation technology.

By combining CCSL’s revolutionary technology with Veolia’s commitment to combatting climate change, this agreement provides the two partners with an opportunity to reduce the impact of the greenhouse effect of industrial activities.

CCSL recently announced the successful commissioning of its flagship project in Tamil Nadu, India, where a coal-fired power plant has become the site of the first industrial installation to re-use all its CO2 emissions. The project will ensure 60,000 metric tons of CO2 are captured each year and then converted into soda ash, a chemical compound that is commonly used in glassmaking.

Privately financed, the site captures all the CO2 at a cost of US$30 per metric ton, half the cost of existing technology. “This partnership is a fantastic illustration of Veolia’s Open Innovation strategy to partner with the most promising industries to stay one step ahead with solutions and technology,” says Laurent Auguste, Executive Vice President Innovation & Markets at Veolia. “With CCSL, we will mitigate CO2 emissions and enhance the prospects for the circular economy around carbon capture and its use by industry. It demonstrates Veolia’s commitment to co-create solutions to fight climate change.”

CEO of CCSL, Aniruddha Sharma adds: “The partnership with Veolia will further boost our mission to help companies lower their carbon footprint in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. Our cutting-edge technology and Veolia’s extensive service offering in water, energy and waste represents an ideal alliance”.

Carbon Clean Solutions Limited (CCSL) is a global leader in low-cost carbon dioxide (CO2) separation technology for industrial and gas treating applications. The company’s patented APBS technology significantly reduces the costs and environmental impacts of CO2 separation, when compared to existing techniques. CCSL’s research was funded by competitive grants, and the company was awarded a ‘Technology Pioneer’ award by the World Economic Forum in 2015. The technology has been proven at demonstration scale in over 10 locations, including the UK, USA, Germany, India, Norway and the Netherlands, and is currently in use at the world’s largest industrial-scale carbon capture and utilisation plant in Tuticorin, India. CCSL is headquartered in London and also operates offices in India and the United States.

Veolia group is the global leader in optimised resource management. With over 163,000 employees worldwide, the Group designs and provides water, waste and energy management solutions that contribute to the sustainable development of communities and industries. Through its three complementary business activities, Veolia helps to develop access to resources, preserve available resources, and to replenish them.

In 2016, the Veolia group supplied 100 million people with drinking water and 61 million people with waste water service, produced 54 million megawatt hours of energy and converted 30 million metric tons of waste into new materials and energy. Veolia Environnement (listed on Paris Euronext: VIE) recorded consolidated revenue of €24.39 billion in 2016.
